Skipton has brought home a string of awards at this year’s Yorkshire In Bloom Awards.

The Town itself has once again matched its previous success by scoring a Silver Award in the overall ‘Small Town’ Category of the competition, but this has been supplemented by four other individual awards in other categories.

Holy Trinity Church gained an impressive Silver-Gilt Award for the maintenance and floral displays in the churchyard overlooking Skipton High Street, The Horticulture Unit of Craven College also received a Silver-Gilt Award for the work being done at their centre based at Skipton Auction Mart - and their contribution to Skipton in Bloom – and the Stepping Stones 2 Project at Aireville Park scored a ‘Merit Award’ in the community groups category. Stepping Stones do a great deal of the planting work in the many dozens of tubs and other floral displays around Skipton Town Centre.

Finally, the Town’s Cenotaph has been named the best in Yorkshire by winning the War Memorials category of the judges’ discretionary awards. A new poppy-style display was designed and planted at the end of last year.

Skipton Town Manager, Brett Butler, accepted four of the awards on behalf of the Town and the Skipton In Bloom Committee. Hayden Davies of the Stepping Stones project collected their award at the glitzy ceremony held at the newly refurbished Spa in Bridlington.

Mr Butler said: “Skipton can be really proud of its achievements this year. Very few towns collected as many awards as we did – and we are competing against many places with very significant budgets and, in some cases, a good number of paid staff.”

He added: “We are particularly pleased with the award for the Cenotaph. A lot of thought and hard work has gone into the new design – and it is a real accolade for Skipton that we have the best war memorial in the County.”

Chairman of the Skipton in Bloom Committee, Robert G Heseltine, said: “The awards are made all the more special as we are just an enthusiastic group of volunteers, dedicated to brightening the environment of our town. I’d like to congratulate all of the individual winners and say a big thank you to our volunteers and to the people and businesses of Skipton who work very hard every year on Skipton in Bloom”

The Skipton in Bloom Group also runs a local gardening competition each year. Judging took place in July – and the winners will be announced by the Mayor of Skipton towards the end of the month – where the awards achieved in yesterday’s ceremony will also be officially presented.

Skipton In Bloom is now looking to build on its success, with the help of a grant from the Skipton Business Improvement District. Mr Heseltine said: “The funding from the BID Group and from Skipton Town Council has helped with several projects this year – and we have others in the planning stages which will, hopefully, help us to do even better at next year’s awards.”

The Group is always on the lookout for new members. Anyone interested in helping should call the Town Council offices on (01756) 794357 and leave their details. A member of the committee will then get in touch.
