A Walk Around The Wilderness

Find out more at

If you stand at the southern gateway into the wilderness(Shortbank Road) and look around. This is an ancient part of town. The chapel-like building across the stream, now an electricity sub-station, has knights Hospitaller connections, perhaps offering refuge to weary travelers who have travelled over Rombalds Moor from Ilkley.

Over the footbridge to the northern path bordering Otley Road or take the Southern path over the stepping stones. Under the inspired leadership of Gwynne Walters the Skipton Civic Society bought the land for £500 from the brewery of the Cross Keys, a further £30,000 was spent to restore it to it`s original beauty. it was handed over to the town in 2000 to mark the millennium.

We hope you enjoy your visit to this little gem of wilderness in the heart of the town.
